Inquiry into the Welsh Premier League

Response from ITV Wales

National Assembly for Wales’ Communities, Equality & Local Government Committee Consultation on Welsh Premier League

Response from ITV Wales

ITV Wales’ flagship news programme Wales Tonight provides comprehensive and nightly coverage of Welsh sport with our Sports Correspondent Richard Morgan. We also provide up-to-the minute Welsh sports news on ITV’s new “live stream” news website www.itv.com/wales.

Our main sports coverage concentrates on international rugby and football, league club football, regional rugby and any other newsworthy Welsh sporting event or competition.

The position on the Welsh Premiership is that, due to the time constraints of a live news programme, we tend not to cover the league on a regular basis. Responding to viewer demand, the priority in our football coverage is for Wales’ league clubs, Swansea and Cardiff, plus Wrexham and Newport in the Bluesquare Bet Premier.

The exception would be European competition, when we tend to carry the results of the Welsh Premiership clubs.

We have in the past also provided detailed coverage of 'one-off' events - for example when a Welsh side takes on a major European team in the Champions' League, or when covering business dealings of one of the clubs.

To conclude, whilst we will always seek to cover the Welsh Premiership when newsworthy, we are unable to commit to giving regular updates on fixtures and results.
